Get to Know Your People
There are many ways to look at leadership, but there’s one thing we can all agree on - leadership is about people. You don’t “lead” systems, budgets, plans or real estate. If you’re a leader, you lead people. (I elaborate on this point and others in the audio Q&A following this essay.) In fact, leadership is all about people – the very definition implies that you’re enlisting other people to help you get things done. The simple truth is that leaders need people as much as people need leaders; after all, it’s hard to get anything of great magnitude done by yourself. Good leaders understand this, and work hard to empower, develop, and take care of their people. And it all starts with getting to know them - beyond just their strengths and weaknesses as employees.
